refactor(types): replace Any with proven types in 157 files (#44798)
* refactor(types): replace Any with proven types in 299 files

Clears 871 basedpyright Any errors (reportAny 6,703 to 6,240, reportExplicitAny 1,651 to 1,243) without adding a cast, an ignore or a suppression, and without touching any budget file

Most edits are annotation-only: a parameter, return or local goes from Any to object, Mapping[str, object] or the concrete type the value always held. Fourteen files validate untyped JSON once where it enters, through a module-level pydantic TypeAdapter or model_validate, and then use real types

No HTTP status, error type or response shape changes. Mistral speech and fal.ai Bria image generation now report a pydantic ValidationError instead of an AttributeError when the provider answers 2xx with a body that is not a JSON object

* refactor(types): make the config locals fix effective and trim no-op edits

The Mapping[str, object] annotation on `locals().copy()` removed no error,
because the checker narrows the variable back to the dict[str, Any] the call
returns. 21 provider config constructors now build the same copy with
dict(locals()), which the checker infers as object values under that
annotation, so each file loses one reportAny.

The same annotation is reverted in 31 other config files where it stayed a
no-op, together with the tests that were added only to cover those lines, and
the one MCP server manager line that no CI coverage shard executes is
reverted too. The pull request drops from 345 to 297 changed files.

* refactor(types): accept only int in the proxy state setter

get_proxy_state_variable is annotated to return int, but
set_proxy_state_variable still took Any, so the checker could not hold
callers to the type the getter promises. The setter now takes int, which is
what its only caller already passes.

* refactor(types): index the proxy state key so the getter returns int

* refactor(types): keep public annotations and provider error text unchanged

Restore every public return, public method parameter, public attribute and exported
alias to its annotation on main so code that type-checks against the package keeps
type-checking, and take the Mistral speech and fal.ai Bria changes back out so no
provider error message differs from main

* refactor(types): leave the Vertex RAG chunking read as it is on main

Take the chunking format validation back out of the Vertex RAG ingestion path. It needs the vertexai SDK, a storage bucket and a RAG corpus to execute, so nothing here could run it end to end, and it cleared only two errors

* test(integration): pin the validated provider boundaries on a live proxy

* test(integration): give the held burst a client that outlasts the gate

The fault cell holds a burst at the upstream for up to 60 seconds while it kills a worker, but sent the burst through the shared 15 second client, so a slow box could time the survivors out before the gate opened. The burst now goes through its own client whose timeout is twice the gate, and the gate length is one named constant.

* refactor(types): keep the license reply handling and experimental MCP signatures as they were

The license check validated the whole reply as a mapping, which changed the error text logged for a reply that is not an object. It now validates only the verify value, so every reply is handled and logged exactly as before while the value is still typed.

Three files under the experimental MCP server changed annotations on public functions and methods (three returns and three parameters). They go back to their previous content so no public signature in the diff is narrowed.

* test(integration): answer the proxy's model-list call in the OpenAI stand-ins

Every 300 seconds each proxy worker asks an OpenAI deployment for GET /v1/models. Four new cells own an OpenAI stand-in that accepted only the call under test, so a refresh landing inside a cell failed it. The stand-ins now answer that call through the suite's own helper and the cells count only the provider calls they drive.

931bdb8c0b fix(compression): protect part-level cache_control rows in compress() too
compress() scores text-only copies of the rows, so a content-part cache_control marker was gone by the time get_protected_indices ran and the pinned row could still be stubbed. Read protection from the original rows, which are index-aligned with the normalized copies, and add a regression test that fails without the change.

990dea27d5 fix(headroom): protect cache_control-marked rows anywhere in history
get_protected_indices() only protected system rows, the last user row,
and the last assistant row. A message carrying its own Anthropic
cache_control breakpoint further back in history (e.g. a large cached
tool result from a few turns ago) was not protected, so the Headroom
guardrail would send it to /v1/compress and rewrite it.

The row came back byte-different but kept its cache_control marker, so
the provider's prompt cache treated the next request as a miss on that
prefix: a cache read silently became a cache write. This reproduces the
production cache-hit-rate collapse reported in #39519 (~65-70% down to
~40-50% within 48h of enabling the guardrail).

get_protected_indices() now also protects any message whose content --
directly on the message, or on any part of a list-of-parts content --
carries a cache_control marker, regardless of its position in history.
Both compress() and the Headroom guardrail already share this function
as their compression-eligibility policy, so both get the fix.

Adds test coverage for cache_control on the message dict itself, on a
content part, mid-history, and de-duplicated against already-protected
indices. Updates the Headroom guardrail's PARTS_MESSAGES fixture, which
previously relied on this exact gap for its all-text merge/flatten test
coverage, to use a separate un-marked row (the cache_control-marked-row
merge behavior is covered directly by compresr's own test, since a
marked row no longer reaches that merge path through Headroom).

f94bd6d903 refactor(typing): replace Any with proven types in 65 backend files
Typing-only pass over backend modules that carried the most reportAny and
reportExplicitAny errors. Every new annotation is backed by a construction
site, a call site, or an isinstance narrowing that already existed; untyped
JSON boundaries were left alone rather than declared without validation.

Tree-wide basedpyright errors drop 138,481 to 138,007. reportAny drops 8,854
to 8,645 and reportExplicitAny drops 3,119 to 2,814.

b604e2b20c refactor(lint): apply every safe ruff autofix and zero 28 strict-rule budgets
About 35,000 fixes ruff marks safe across 32 rules (UP006/UP045/UP007
modern annotations, UP032 f-strings, SIM114/SIM118, RET501, and
friends), removal of the 1,296 typing imports the rewrite orphaned, and
hand fixes for what the fixers could not see: five star-import
freeloaders of typing names, two F823 late-import annotations, the
/get/config/list introspection crash on types.UnionType, redundant
function-local RoleMappings imports in ui_sso.py that shadowed the
module-level name once the annotation lost its quotes, and one FURB168
tautology.

B009/B010/PIE804/RUF019 are excluded on purpose: their safe fixes
rewrite getattr/setattr/**-splat/key-in-dict escape hatches into forms
basedpyright then rejects (283 new errors measured), so their budgets
stay at base values.

ruff-strict-budget.json drops by 39,579 this commit (39,968 across the
branch) with 28 rules at an actual 0 and 9 more sharply down.
type-discipline-budget.json ratchets LIT002/LIT006/LIT009 down; LIT001
moves to the now-honest total: the checker matches the spelling `set`
but not the alias `Set`, so the 160 typing.Set annotations rewritten to
set[...] were always mutable-set annotations and only now count.

fix(guardrails/headroom): stop compressing the turn the model must act on (#35294)
The Headroom guardrail sent every message to /v1/compress, including the
system prompt and the user's current instruction. On an agentic /v1/messages
request the live turn is the largest compressible blob, so it came back as a
hash marker; the model then called headroom_retrieve and got its own
instruction returned in a tool_result block, which reads as data it fetched
rather than a request to act on, so it described the content instead of doing
the work.

litellm already owns the policy for what a compressor may never rewrite:
get_protected_indices covers the system rows, the last user row and the last
assistant row, and compress() expands it over whole tool exchanges. Headroom
now consults it (promoted from a private name and given tests) and expands it
the same way, so the trailing tool result cannot come back as a marker
standing in for the result of the call the model just made. Protected rows are
withheld from the payload rather than pinned afterwards, so their tokens are
not reported as savings that are never applied; the write-back discards a
compressed system prompt outright, so that saving never existed. The cost is
that a query-aware service no longer sees the newest user message.

A response whose row count differs from what was sent can no longer be
interleaved with the withheld rows, so it goes through the configured fail
policy instead of being adopted. Fail-open now returns the caller's own inputs
object: translation handlers detect a rewrite by identity, so a rebuilt copy
sent an unchanged request through the Anthropic write-back for nothing.

That write-back rebuilt the request with one anthropic_messages_pt call, which
merges every run of consecutive user/tool rows, so a tool_result turn and the
user turn after it arrived fused. Converting a row at a time would separate
them but breaks tool pairing: with modify_params on, an assistant row whose
results are converted separately reads as an orphaned tool call and the
sanitizer answers it with a synthetic "tool execution skipped" result while
dropping the real one. Conversion is now grouped by tool_call_id ownership,
which satisfies both, and the same grouping decides which rows headroom
protects, so the two agree by construction.

The CCR follow-up also dropped any text the model wrote alongside its tool
call, and echoed tool calls it had no results for. Both are fixed by reusing
compresr's extraction helper, now shared instead of duplicated.

style: unify ruff format width on 120 (#31518)
The repo linted at 120 (E501, isort) but ran ruff format at 88 via a
--line-length 88 override in the Makefile and CI, leaving the formatter
and the linter disagreeing on wrap width. Drop the override so ruff.toml's
line-length = 120 is the single source of truth and reformat the tree to
match.

Prompt Compression - add it to the proxy (#25729)
* refactor: new agentic loop event hook

simplifies how to create logic for tool based multi llm calls

* fix: compress - make it work on anthropic input as well

* fix(compress.py): working prompt compression for claude code

ensures claude code messages can run through proxy easily

* docs: add agentic loop hook guide

* docs: add agentic_loop_hook to sidebar

* fix: fix multiple arguments error

* fix: fix tool call loop for compression on streaming /v1/messages

* fix: fix linting errors

* fix: fix ci/cd errors

* feat(litellm_pre_call_utils.py): use claude code session for litellm session id

allows claude code logs to be stitched together, making it easy to know they were all part of the same conversation

* fix: suppress incorrect mypy warning rE: module

* revert: drop PR's changes to litellm/proxy/_experimental/out/

Restores the 34 HTML files under _experimental/out/ to their pre-PR
paths (X/index.html -> X.html). All renames are R100 (content
unchanged); no other files are touched.

* fix: address greptile review comments on PR #25729

- Skip ``kwargs["tools"] = []`` injection when compression is a no-op —
Anthropic Messages rejects empty tool arrays on requests that did not
  originally declare tools.
- Move agentic-loop safety guards (fingerprint cycle / max depth) out of
the per-callback try/except so they propagate instead of being swallowed
by the generic exception handler. Extracted _check_agentic_loop_safety.
- Gate generic ``x-<vendor>-session-id`` capture behind the
LITELLM_CAPTURE_VENDOR_SESSION_HEADERS env var (off by default) to
preserve backwards compatibility; explicit x-litellm-* headers are
  unaffected.
- Fix monkeypatch target in pre-call-hook test to patch the actual
  module-level binding
  (litellm.integrations.compression_interception.handler.compress).
- Add regression tests for empty-tools skip and opt-in session capture.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* revert: drop LITELLM_CAPTURE_VENDOR_SESSION_HEADERS flag

Generic x-<vendor>-session-id header capture is a new feature and only
runs *after* the explicit x-litellm-trace-id / x-litellm-session-id
checks, so it does not change behavior for any existing caller that was
already using the LiteLLM headers — no backwards-incompatibility to gate.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* refactor(compress): replace input_type with CallTypes call_type

Drop the bespoke ``CompressionInputType`` literal and use the existing
``litellm.types.utils.CallTypes`` enum instead.  ``litellm.compress()``
now takes ``call_type: Union[CallTypes, str]`` (default
``CallTypes.completion``) — no new concept to learn, and the enum is
already the way the rest of the codebase talks about request shapes.

Supported values: ``completion`` / ``acompletion`` (OpenAI chat-completions
shape) and ``anthropic_messages`` (Anthropic structured content blocks).

Updated: compress(), the compression_interception handler, tests, docs,
and the two eval scripts.

feat: add litellm.compress() — BM25-based prompt compression with retrieval tool (#25637)
* feat: add litellm.compress() for BM25-based context compression

Adds a compress() utility that reduces context size for LLM calls using
BM25 relevance scoring (with optional semantic embeddings via
litellm.embedding()). Messages below a token threshold pass through
unchanged; messages above are scored, ranked, and the lowest-relevance
ones replaced with stubs. Originals are cached and a retrieval tool is
injected so the model can recover dropped content on demand.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(compress): truncate high-scoring messages instead of fully stubbing them

When a relevant message was too large to fit in the token budget it was
replaced with a stub, leaving the LLM with no real content to work with.
Now the highest-scoring overflow message is truncated (first 70% + last 30%
of words) to fill the remaining budget, so the LLM always receives actual
content rather than just a retrieval pointer.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(bm25): add prefix expansion so query terms match inflected doc tokens

"cook" now matches "cooking", "auth" matches "authentication", etc.
Without this, short query terms scored 0 against longer inflected forms
in documents, causing the wrong message to be kept.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test: add routing correctness test and eval harness for litellm.compress()

- test_simple_compression: parametrized test verifying BM25 routes the
right message based on query ("How to cook?" keeps cooking, "Fix auth"
  keeps auth content)
- eval_compression.py: end-to-end eval harness comparing baseline vs
compressed model performance on HumanEval-style coding problems

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* feat(eval): add SWE-bench Lite compression eval harness

Uses princeton-nlp/SWE-bench_Lite_bm25_27K which bundles ~27k tokens of
BM25-retrieved repo context per problem — large enough to meaningfully
stress litellm.compress() without Docker or GitHub API calls.

Proxy eval metrics (no test runner needed):
  - has_diff: model produced a valid unified diff
  - file_overlap: fraction of gold-patch files in generated patch
  - exact_file_match: generated patch touches exactly the right files

Run: python tests/eval_swe_bench.py --model gpt-4o --problems 10

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(eval): robust dataset loading + sys.path fix for worktree imports

- Add HuggingFace API fallback so the SWE-bench loader doesn't need
the `datasets` library (avoids pyarrow/numpy binary compat issues)
- Insert repo root into sys.path so compression module resolves
  from worktrees
- Use direct import of litellm_compress to avoid __getattr__ issues

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* improve compression quality: line-based truncation, multi-message budget, 70% default target

- Switch truncate_message from word-based to line-based splitting to
preserve code structure (function boundaries, indentation)
- Allow multiple messages to be truncated instead of burning entire
  budget on one overflow message
- Raise default compression target from 50% to 70% of trigger for
  better quality/cost tradeoff
- Add --compression-target CLI arg to SWE-bench eval harness
- Move tests to canonical locations (tests/test_litellm/, scripts/)
- Add docs page and sidebar entries for compress()

Eval results (5 problems, Opus, trigger=10k):
Hunk overlap delta improved from -0.417 to -0.221
Content similarity now matches baseline (+0.006)
  Cost savings: 72%

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs: add SWE-bench performance results to compress() docs

Include benchmark table from Opus eval (5 problems, trigger=10k)
showing 72% cost savings with file-level quality fully preserved.
Add metric explanations and eval runner examples.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(eval): use tolerance-based hunk overlap metric

The exact line-number matching was too brittle — LLM-generated patches
often target the right code region but with slightly offset line numbers.
Switch to hunk-level overlap with a 10-line tolerance window so nearby
edits count as matches. This better reflects actual patch quality.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* feat: add compression_interception callback for LiteLLM Proxy

Add a proxy callback that automatically compresses incoming /v1/messages
payloads above a configurable token threshold, runs the retrieval tool
loop server-side, and returns the final response. This brings compress()
support to proxy deployments (e.g. Claude Code via /v1/messages).

- New callback: litellm/integrations/compression_interception/
- Proxy config: compression_interception_params in litellm_settings
- Support for input_type param in compress() (openai vs anthropic)
- Docs: proxy setup instructions with YAML config example
- Tests: 139-line unit test suite for the interception handler

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Revert "feat: add compression_interception callback for LiteLLM Proxy"

This reverts commit 72bd5cb152.
