From 6eb6f10091f3290babababfefcb06b7a55e4cae5 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: yucheng Date: Fri, 30 Oct 2026 13:02:21 -0700 Subject: [PATCH] fix(guardrails)!: read Gemini contents in the Lakera v2 guardrail Lakera v2 built its inspection messages from messages, Responses input and instructions only, so a Gemini generateContent body (systemInstruction and contents) on /gemini, /vertex_ai or the native generateContent route sent no text and the request reached the provider unchecked. It now reads the system instruction and each turn's text parts, with model read as assistant. Gemini contents have no write-back path, so mask and inject_system_message block on that shape, and monitor forwards it unmasked with the reason logged. --- .../guardrail_hooks/lakera_ai_v2.py | 67 ++++++- .../test_lakera_v2_gemini_contents.py | 186 ++++++++++++++++++ .../guardrail_hooks/test_lakera_ai_v2.py | 95 +++++++++ 3 files changed, 339 insertions(+), 9 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/integration/authorization/test_lakera_v2_gemini_contents.py diff --git a/litellm/proxy/guardrails/guardrail_hooks/lakera_ai_v2.py b/litellm/proxy/guardrails/guardrail_hooks/lakera_ai_v2.py index 3e5c54b4501..2cc3e5383ca 100644 --- a/litellm/proxy/guardrails/guardrail_hooks/lakera_ai_v2.py +++ b/litellm/proxy/guardrails/guardrail_hooks/lakera_ai_v2.py @@ -15,6 +15,7 @@ from litellm.integrations.custom_guardrail import ( DEFAULT_ADVISORY_MESSAGE, CustomGuardrail, ) +from litellm.litellm_core_utils.core_helpers import as_str_mapping from litellm.llms.base_llm.guardrail_translation.utils import ( effective_skip_system_message_for_guardrail, effective_skip_tool_message_for_guardrail, @@ -43,6 +44,9 @@ from litellm.types.utils import CallTypesLiteral, GuardrailStatus, ModelResponse _DECODED_JSON: Final = TypeAdapter(object) _RESPONSE_FIELDS: Final = TypeAdapter(Mapping[str, object]) +_OBJECT_LIST: Final = TypeAdapter(list[object]) + +_GEMINI_ROLES: Final[Mapping[str, str]] = MappingProxyType({"user": "user", "model": "assistant", "function": "tool"}) _DETECTOR_CATEGORY_PHRASES: Final[Mapping[str, str]] = MappingProxyType( { @@ -207,6 +211,8 @@ def _unmaskable_reason( return "messages and input are both present, so the write-back is positionally ambiguous" if "messages" in data and not isinstance(data.get("messages"), list): return "a messages key that isn't a list, so there's nothing to merge the redacted content into" + if _has_gemini_contents(data): + return "Gemini contents, which have no write-back path for the redacted content" if not _has_responses_instructions(guardrail, data): return "no write-back path for the redacted content" if not (lakera_response or {}).get("payload"): @@ -214,25 +220,64 @@ def _unmaskable_reason( return None +def _gemini_items(value: object) -> Sequence[object]: + return _OBJECT_LIST.validate_python(value) if isinstance(value, list) else () + + +def _gemini_text(content: object) -> str: + """Join the text parts of one Gemini ``Content`` object, skipping inline data, files and function calls.""" + parts: Final = _gemini_items((as_str_mapping(content) or {}).get("parts")) + texts: Final = ((as_str_mapping(part) or {}).get("text") for part in parts) + return "\n".join(text for text in texts if isinstance(text, str) and text) + + +def _has_gemini_contents(data: object) -> bool: + """True if ``data`` is a Gemini ``generateContent`` body, which carries its prompt in + ``contents`` and ``systemInstruction`` instead of ``messages``.""" + fields: Final = as_str_mapping(data) or {} + return isinstance(fields.get("contents"), list) or isinstance( + fields.get("systemInstruction") or fields.get("system_instruction"), dict + ) + + +def _gemini_inspection_messages(data: Mapping[str, object]) -> Sequence[Mapping[str, str]]: + """Chat-style messages for a Gemini ``generateContent`` body: ``systemInstruction`` first as a + system message, then each ``contents`` turn with its text parts joined and ``model`` read as + ``assistant``.
