# Solitaire App Review
A thorough evaluation of the complete terminal-based Klondike Solitaire game has been conducted against the specifications outlined in `.ai/solitaire-spec.md`.
## 1. Directory Structure and Setup
The application is located in the `solitaire-app/` directory and follows the required layout:
- `solitaire-app/main.py`: Entry point handling argument parsing (`--smoke` mode) and executing the TUI.
- `solitaire-app/src/solitaire_tui/game.py`: Core game engine containing clean, decoupled business logic, domain entities (`Card`, `Deck`), piles, and game rules.
- `solitaire-app/src/solitaire_tui/ui.py`: curses-based terminal user interface handling layout rendering, cursor navigation, input events, and visual status messages.
- `solitaire-app/tests/test_game.py`: Unified suite of tests checking game logic rules and mock-based rendering logic.
All files are structured properly under a modern python layout utilizing `src/` style and a `pyproject.toml` file with defined dependencies and tool options.
## 2. Core Game Rules Compliance (Draw-One Klondike)
The core game logic in `game.py` correctly adheres to Draw-One Klondike Solitaire rules:
- **Deal**: Shuffles a standard 52-card deck, deals cards to the 7 tableau columns incrementally (Column 1 gets 1, Column 2 gets 2, ..., Column 7 gets 7), reveals the top card of each column, and stores the remaining 24 cards in the stock pile face-down.
- **Draw**: Accurately pops the top card of the stock and appends it face-up to the waste pile. Recycling the waste pile back to the stock correctly maintains the original draw order by reversing the waste pile.
- **Tableau-to-Tableau Moves**: Supports moving a single card or a valid face-up build (alternating colors, descending ranks) from one tableau column to another. Correctly restricts placement on empty columns to Kings (rank 13).
- **Tableau-to-Foundation Moves**: Moves top cards of a tableau column to a foundation pile, enforcing that the foundation must start with an Ace (rank 1) and build up sequentially by matching suit.
- **Waste-to-Tableau/Foundation**: Correctly allows moving cards from the waste pile onto the tableau columns or foundations following matching rules.
- **Foundation-to-Tableau**: Correctly allows pulling cards back down from a foundation pile onto a tableau column.
- **Auto-Reveal/Flip**: Automatically flips the top card of a tableau column face-up when a move exposes it.
- **Win Condition**: Accurately detects when all 4 foundations contain 13 cards (concluding with Kings).
## 3. UI and Keyboard Controls
The terminal user interface (`ui.py`) uses `curses` and delivers a highly usable grid-based navigation design:
- **Grid Navigation**: Features an intuitive coordinate-based traversal scheme using both standard **Arrow keys** and Vim navigation keys (`h`, `j`, `k`, `l`).
- **Partial Stack Movement**: Moves the cursor up and down within the face-up cards of a Tableau column to select a specific card in a stack for moving a partial build.
- **Selection Visuals**: Highlighted elements render with reverse video. Selected cards are framed with asterisks (`*`) and highlighted fully down the stack when a build is moved.
- **Color Configuration**: Hearts and Diamonds render with red text (via `curses` color pairs), while Clubs and Spades render in white/standard text. Empty piles are marked cleanly with cyan tags `[ -]`.
- **Keyboard Shortcuts**:
- `Space` / `Enter`: Triggers Draw (if on Stock), Select (if no selection), or Move (if selection is active).
- `Escape` / `c` / `C`: Cancels selection.
- `a` / `A`: Tries to auto-move the highlighted card to any valid foundation.
- `u` / `U`: Unlimited Undo capability using state serialization.
- `r` / `R`: Redeals and restarts the game.
- `?`: Pulls up an in-game control help banner.
- `q` / `Q`: Quits the application.
## 4. Test Verification
The automated verification tests are highly robust:
- Running `pytest tests/ -v` executes 20 comprehensive unit tests that validate card/pile properties, standard Klondike move rules (valid and invalid paths), history recording/undoing, auto-reveals, victory state, and mock-based TUI screen rendering logic.
- Running `python3 main.py --smoke` executes a non-interactive check verifying successful module imports, state instantiation, TUI initialization, and executes the suite of rule tests. It successfully runs in non-interactive environments without initializing interactive curses terminals.
## Conclusion
The terminal Klondike Solitaire game is fully complete, beautifully structured, and completely ready for gameplay/demo use. All features and requirements are robustly implemented and verified.
