# Payment trajectory compaction pilot
Compare full history, ReMe decision-model previews and ordinary Qwen summaries on the synthetic payment incident
collected with Hermes. This is a fixed pilot exam, not a general-purpose benchmark. The source must contain the
`PAY-4827` / `INV-731` / `CH-991` incident. Provider calls are opt-in and outputs must be outside the repository.
From the repository root, with the development environment and `reme-ai[decision]` installed:
```bash
python benchmark/compaction/run.py --live \
--trajectory /path/to/trajectory.full.json \
--output /path/outside/repository/experiment
```
Credentials come from the repository `.env`: `LLM_API_KEY`, `LLM_BASE_URL`, `DECISION_MODEL_API_KEY`, and optional
`DECISION_MODEL_NAME` / `DECISION_MODEL_BASE_URL`. Answering and summarization default to `qwen3.8-max`.
The final assistant report is excluded to prevent answer leakage. The original system prompt and initial user request
remain unchanged in all arms. Jev defaults and a short-history diagnostic (`preserve_recent_messages=0`,
`preview_chars=80`) are separate arms; the latter is not a proposed production default. Ordinary summarization reads
all tool history, then replaces it with one structured summary. This is a direct Qwen summary baseline, not the Hermes
automatic threshold/compaction pipeline. No arm can retrieve the archive during evaluation.
The exam contains ten exact fact checks and three structured repair-plan checks, frozen before inference. Each context
is evaluated three times at temperature zero, without an LLM judge. Identical contexts reuse the same evaluations.
Reported prompt tokens come from Qwen usage and include the common instructions and exam. They are not billing savings.
Compression is generated once per arm; repeated answering does not measure compression variability or independent tasks.
To examine summary-length sensitivity, use a fresh output directory:
```bash
python benchmark/compaction/run.py --live \
--trajectory /path/to/trajectory.full.json \
--output /path/outside/repository/summary500 \
--summary-words 500 --summary-max-tokens 2048
```
Artifacts include the frozen protocol and exam, source, proposed contexts, decisions, Qwen request/response bodies,
checks, usage and a report. HTTP headers and credentials are not saved. The original trajectory is checked for changes.
A truncated summary is rejected rather than silently counted as a valid compression baseline.
This small synthetic sample cannot establish task success, reliability on real long histories, or superiority at a
matched token budget. Repair-plan checks do not execute a patch. Investigate omitted facts, recovery, prompt-cache costs
and longer multi-stage tasks before choosing a production strategy.
## Matched-budget span experiment
See [评测方案与实测结果(中文)](./RESULTS.md) for the frozen protocol, full comparison table, omissions and limits.
`span_experiment.py` tests a separate experimental policy: split long tool observations on line boundaries,
score complete spans with Jev, then select original spans by descending usefulness within a fixed budget. It does
not change the production step's conservative probability threshold. Short code and JSON observations stay whole.
Every selected span retains its file and character offsets; the archived source remains unchanged.
```bash
python -m benchmark.compaction.span_experiment --live \
--trajectory /path/to/trajectory.full.json \
--output /path/outside/repository/span-experiment \
--tokenizer /path/to/cached/qwen/tokenizer.json
```
The runner needs the optional `tokenizers` Python package and a local tokenizer JSON. No new production dependency
is required. The local tokenizer is a budgeting proxy, not a claim about the provider's exact tokenizer. Its hash is
recorded and actual API prompt usage is reported separately.
The frozen defaults compare 600 and 1000 evidence-token allowances against full evidence, deterministic head/tail
clipping and ordinary structured Qwen summaries. All arms preserve the same original system/user instructions and
use a normalized evidence bundle, rather than the original API tool-message framing. Budgets are identical upper
bounds, not forced exact lengths. Oversized summaries are marked invalid; truncated responses abort the run.
No arm can recover omitted content during evaluation. There is no threshold tuning against exam answers.
Both the original short payment trajectory and a controlled long-log variant are evaluated. The latter inserts
180 routine health-check lines around the original log events, preserving the original text. This is one task with
a noise augmentation, not two independent tasks or a newly collected trajectory. Source variants, exam, gold answers
and settings are saved before inference. Jev scoring receives the task and evidence, never the exam or gold answers.
Alongside ten exact fact checks, generated retry functions run against six deterministic behavioral cases:
success, timeout followed by success with one idempotency key, no retry on HTTP 402/422, exhaustion raising the last
timeout, and distinct keys for separate payments. `repair_check.py` accepts only a restricted function grammar and
bounded iteration with inert clients; it provides no file, network or payment access. This is a small function-level
repair test, not a full agent task benchmark. Each context is answered twice; each summary is generated once.
Reports include evidence and actual input tokens, factual accuracy, repair pass rates, compaction latency, usage,
full requests/responses and source offsets. Compression savings alone do not establish lower total cost or better
quality. The experiment may fail to show a Jev advantage; report that outcome without changing the frozen budgets.

分块策略见 [span_experiment.py](./span_experiment.py),不改变生产 `compact_context` 按工具配对判断、

长日志中,包含“首次请求超时但服务端已提交”的片段与多条健康检查混在一起,被 Jev 评为 `0.39`;
本次本地产物目录为 `/Users/yuli/workspace/trajectory-runs/compaction-spans-20261015/`,原始采集目录为
`/Users/yuli/workspace/trajectory-runs/hermes-qwen38max-20261015-190749/`。
| `*.context.json`、`*.trial*.request.json` / `response.json` | 实际评测上下文、原始回答与 usage |
| `*.summary*.request.json` / `response.json` | 摘要生成提示与响应 |
| `results.json`、`usage.json` | 每次回答的确定性评分与调用记录 |
| `REPORT_ZH.md`、`validation.json`、`code/` |

# Context compaction with decision models
Long tasks accumulate source reads, stale searches, repeated diagnostics, and completed side tasks.
`compact_context` uses the **next action** to judge whether an old tool call still matters and whether its full result
must remain verbatim. It returns a proposed message snapshot and per-call decisions. The host decides whether to apply it.
`compact_context` proposes recoverable previews of old tool results. It scores evidence for the current task,
keeps tool calls and uncertain evidence, and leaves source history under the host's control. The provider-independent
`as_decision_model` interface currently supports AgentScope's TypeSafe/Jev adapter.
The workflow calls the provider-independent `as_decision_model` interface. The current `agentscope` adapter uses
AgentScope's TypeSafe/Jev implementation; jobs keep the same interface when another backend is registered.

## How one pass works
1. **Archive first.** Supply an AgentScope 2.x JSON message snapshot, `goal`, optional `next_action`, a read-only tool
allowlist, and `source_refs` mapping original call IDs to recoverable archive locations. References are opaque host
identifiers: ReMe does not open, verify, or create them. The host must archive before applying a proposal and provide
a retrieval tool that resolves them. No reference means no compaction for that pair.
2. **Protect structure and indispensable evidence.** Pair unique `tool_call` / `tool_result` IDs. First, system, recent,
explicitly protected messages and calls stay intact. Failed/unfinished calls, non-text results, invalid inputs,
mismatched tool names, and ambiguous pairs stay intact. `eligible_tool_names` defaults to empty.
3. **Show bounded evidence.** Each request contains its own candidate units: tool name, input, result head/tail preview,
character count and completeness flags. It also carries the goal, next action and bounded first/system/protected/recent text. Thinking is
not sent. Hosts must sanitize inputs and outputs before inference; previews may contain source data.
4. **Ask one question per pair.** Does this evidence contain information needed to continue correctly? The question
measures usefulness, not irrecoverability. Missing or truncated context expresses uncertainty. Oversized units are
left unobserved and retained; they are never scored after their evidence has been removed.
5. **Replace only clearly unnecessary results.** At probability `<= drop_threshold` (default `0.1`), a result can become
a verbatim head/tail excerpt plus its source reference. Higher, invalid, or missing probabilities retain the result.
Provider errors and timeouts retain the affected evidence; external cancellation propagates after requests drain.
1. **The host archives the original history.** Supply an AgentScope 2.x JSON message snapshot, current `goal`, eligible
tool names, and protection lists. ReMe neither archives history nor updates a running Agent's state. Apply proposals
only when the original record remains recoverable.
2. **Deterministic guards select candidates.** Match `tool_call` and `tool_result` by ID. Calls must be `finished`, results
must be `success`, tools must be explicitly allowlisted, and outputs must be entirely text. Duplicate IDs, missing or
reversed pairs, and invalid JSON inputs are ineligible.
3. **Build a bounded observation.** Send the goal, conversation text, tool names, shortened inputs, and result character
counts. Tool-result bodies and thinking are omitted. When necessary, shorten inputs and old text, omit old text-only
messages, or merge old call records in this view. These changes do not rewrite conversation text in the returned snapshot.
4. **Ask two binary questions per candidate.** `call_<id>` asks whether the call and its input still matter for the next
action. `result_<id>` asks whether the full output must remain verbatim and later retrieval would be insufficient.
Keep each question pair together; batches repeat the same observation and run under concurrency and timeout limits.
5. **Rebuild only after every batch succeeds.** Validate answer types and probabilities before applying decisions to a
deep copy. Missing answers, invalid probabilities, failed batches, or timeout fail the call without a partial proposal.
The host should continue using its saved original snapshot.
No tool call or message is deleted. Replacements occur only when shorter. User/assistant text, thinking, metadata and
source inputs remain unchanged. Explicitly protect constraints, audit receipts and unique evidence; probabilities are
not substitutes for host protection rules. The threshold is a conservative starting point, not a calibrated guarantee.
## From probabilities to actions
With retention threshold `t` (default `0.5`), check the result probability first:
| Condition | Action | Proposed snapshot |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `p_result >= t` | `keep` | Keep the call and its complete result, even if `p_call` is lower |
| `p_result < t` and `p_call >= t` | `drop_result` | Keep the call; shorten long text output to a prefix plus an omission marker |
| Both probabilities `< t` | `drop_call` | Remove both tool blocks; remove a message only if this makes it empty |
The default prefix is 300 characters. The marker points back to archived history. Replacement occurs only if it makes
output shorter, so `drop_result` can leave a short output unchanged. User text, assistant text, thinking, and untouched
block fields remain intact.
Deterministic protection takes precedence over probabilities:
- The first message, the most recent `preserve_recent_messages` messages, and `protected_message_ids` are protected.
Protection of either endpoint protects the complete pair.
- `protected_call_ids` and tools outside `eligible_tool_names` are protected. The default allowlist is empty, so no tools
are compacted unless the caller explicitly opts them in.
- Unfinished or failed calls, non-text outputs, and mismatched tool names remain intact. Duplicate or missing IDs are
also retained, but may have no entry in `decisions`.
The host must choose read-only tools for the allowlist; ReMe cannot infer tool side effects from their names.
Explicitly protect indispensable audit records, change receipts, and evidence; semantic probabilities are insufficient
as the sole protection mechanism.

as shown in [integration tests](https://github.com/agentscope-ai/ReMe/blob/main/tests/integration/test_decision_compaction.py).
The standard Response's `answer` contains:
## Host token budget
- `schema_version` and `messages`: version and proposed snapshot; `changed` and `reason`: whether it changed, with
`compacted`, `no_change`, or `no_candidates`.
- `decisions`: internal pair ID, original `call_id`, action, reason, and `keep_call` / `keep_result` probabilities for
pairs evaluated by the model.
- `stats`: message and character counts before and after, candidate/protected counts, estimated observation tokens and
fitting stage, request count, provider usage, and elapsed time. The same statistics appear in `response.metadata.compaction`.
Decision request estimates and downstream input budgets are separate. To enforce `max_output_tokens`, embed the Step
with a synchronous `token_counter(messages)` that counts the host's actual serialized model input, including system
instructions, tool schemas and framing. The counter must return a non-negative integer; configuration without a counter
fails before inference. ReMe's search tokenizers are not model token counters.
Check `success`, recalculate the final input budget with the host model's tokenizer, and apply, repeat, or reject the
proposal. Compaction does not automatically summarize, write long-term memory, or execute historical tool calls.
```python
step = CompactContextStep(as_decision_model=decision_model, token_counter=count_model_input)
response = await step(
messages=snapshot,
goal="Fix retries",
next_action="Review the patch",
source_refs=archive_refs,
eligible_tool_names=["read_file"],
options={"max_output_tokens": 32000},
)
```
## Budgets, concurrency, and timeout
Already within budget means no model requests. Otherwise eligible low-probability results are previewed in increasing
probability order until the budget is met. A replacement must reduce both size and the host count. Required/uncertain
content is never removed to force a fit. If it still does not fit, `reason="budget_exceeded"` and `budget_met=false`:
use host summarization or another fallback before applying. Without a requested budget, all eligible low-probability
results may be previewed and `budget_met` is `null`; the host must check the final input itself.
| `options` field | Default | Purpose |
## Contract and defaults
The standard Response `answer` has `schema_version=2`, proposed `messages`, `changed`, `reason`, `budget_met`, `decisions`
and `stats`. Each decision has the original `call_id`, internal `id`, `action` (`keep` / `preview`), `probability`, `reason`
and `source_ref`. Reasons distinguish protection, uncertainty, unobserved evidence, invalid answers, provider errors,
timeout and no savings. Statistics include before/after sizes and host token counts, candidate/protection counts,
maximum estimated batch-state tokens, request count, usage and elapsed time. Statistics also appear in response metadata.
| Option | Default | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `keep_threshold` | `0.5` | Shared retention threshold for both questions |
| `preserve_recent_messages` | `6` | Messages protected verbatim, counted as messages rather than turns |
| `max_state_tokens` | `25000` | Estimated observation token limit |
| `max_request_tokens` | `30000` | Per-batch estimated observation/question budget, including a 256-token overhead reserve |
| `truncate_head_chars` | `300` | Text prefix retained by `drop_result` |
| `max_concurrency` | `4` | Concurrent decision requests, from 1 to 32 |
| `total_timeout_seconds` | `30` | Overall deadline for decision requests and their queueing |
| `drop_threshold` | `0.1` | Preview only results at or below this probability |
| `preserve_recent_messages` | `6` | Protect this many recent messages |
| `evidence_chars` | `2000` | Maximum characters per input/result preview or recent text |
| `preview_chars` | `300` | Maximum head/tail excerpt in the proposed result, excluding recovery marker |
| `max_state_tokens` | `25000` | Estimated decision-state ceiling |
| `max_request_tokens` | `30000` | Estimated state/questions ceiling, including 256 tokens of overhead |
| `max_output_tokens` | `null` | Optional host-counted input budget |
| `max_concurrency` | `4` | Maximum concurrent decision requests |
| `total_timeout_seconds` | `30` | Overall request and queueing deadline |
Component `timeout`, `max_retries`, and `retry_delay` control individual provider requests and retries. The compaction
preset uses 10 seconds, one retry, and 0.5 seconds of initial backoff. Local token estimates differ from provider billing
and from the host model tokenizer. If the observation cannot fit, or a single question pair cannot fit a request, the
call fails and the host retains its original snapshot.
## Two live-model integration scenarios
The [integration tests](https://github.com/agentscope-ai/ReMe/blob/main/tests/integration/test_decision_compaction.py)
provide two synthetic long-task histories. Historical deploys, rollbacks, and database queries are fixture data and are
never executed; only the decision requests call the real TypeSafe/Jev API.
| Scenario | Current task and important candidates | Distractors and protection boundaries |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Payment retry patch | Produce an exact patch from previously read source and regression-test lines; keep those candidate results intact | Completed theme CSS, icon searches, and obsolete inventory include removable calls; preserve billing evidence, approval receipts, failed/pending work, duplicate IDs, and recent messages |
| Replication incident | Quote exact incident logs and WAL offsets in a root-cause report; keep the verbatim evidence intact | Mix in completed marketing reports, holiday weather, and retired-system load tests; preserve audit approval, rollback receipts, non-text charts, failed queries, and recent messages |
Both cases check real batched inference, removal of at least one irrelevant call, full retention of critical candidates,
protected history and conversation text, unchanged original input and temporary archive, and a reduction in output
characters. Semantic assertions can expose model/configuration changes; the tests do not fabricate probabilities to pass.
A live run on 2026-10-15 against the locally configured TypeSafe/Jev endpoint passed both cases. These are JSON
character counts, not token savings:
| Scenario | Characters before | Characters after | Reduction | Irrelevant calls removed | Decision requests |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Payment retry patch | 39,438 | 12,738 | 67.7% | 3 | 2 |
| Replication incident | 51,485 | 12,828 | 75.1% | 4 | 2 |
Explicitly opt in to live API calls:
The integration suite contains two synthetic scenarios: payment retry debugging and replica-lag investigation, with
important source/log evidence competing against completed unrelated tasks. Run explicitly with configured credentials:
```bash
REME_RUN_DECISION_INTEGRATION=1 \
pytest tests/integration/test_decision_compaction.py -v -s
REME_RUN_DECISION_INTEGRATION=1 pytest tests/integration/test_decision_compaction.py -v -s
```
Tests read the environment or repository-root `.env`, with existing environment variables taking precedence. They skip
without opt-in or without an API key. Output contains only synthetic-scenario actions, probabilities, character counts,
and usage. Workspaces and original snapshots use pytest temporary directories. Savings depend on history, goal, and
model decisions; these two scenarios do not establish a general performance guarantee.
Only model requests run externally; fixture tool calls are not executed. These cases test behavior, not general task
success. Evaluate real trajectories against recency and rule-based previews, measuring recovery, continuation quality,
latency and total cost alongside token reduction. ReMe does not automatically summarize or write persistent memory.
## Boundaries
The decision model sees a limited observation and cannot inspect omitted tool-result contents. Incomplete goals or
insufficient tool descriptions can hide relevant evidence. The host must supply a clear next-action goal, explicitly
protect indispensable information, and retain recoverable original history after applying a proposal.
This strategy reduces old tool traces; it does not provide automatic triggering, a final token-budget guarantee,
summary generation, or archival storage.

The [benchmark protocol and results (Chinese)](https://github.com/agentscope-ai/ReMe/blob/main/benchmark/compaction/RESULTS.md)
describe a local run on October 15, 2026, using a synthetic Hermes payment trajectory and a controlled long-log
augmentation. It compares full evidence, Jev span selection, head/tail clipping and ordinary Qwen summaries under
600/1000 evidence-token allowances, with identical system/user instructions and evaluation prompts.
Span ranking is implemented in the experiment runner; the pair-level, low-probability preview policy above is unchanged.
At the 1000-token allowance, Jev retained 100% of facts versus 90% for summarization on the short sample, but 85%
versus 90% on the long-log variant. Jev reduced the long-log request from 8617 to 3557 input tokens (58.7%), with
about 0.8 seconds of compaction versus 16.5 seconds for summarization. Every arm passed all six function-level repair
tests, so those tests did not distinguish repair quality.
This run demonstrates input reduction and lower observed compaction latency, without establishing consistent quality
improvements over summarization. It uses one task and its synthetic variant, with two answers per context. Budgets use
a local tokenizer proxy, input usage comes from the API, and total billing cost and archive recovery were not tested.

流程使用通用 `as_decision_model` 接口,当前 `agentscope` 适配器连接 TypeSafe/Jev。
这一流程通过 `as_decision_model` 接口调用概率决策模型。

** 按调用 ID 配对 `tool_call` 与 `tool_result`。
** 按唯一 ID 配对 `tool_call` 和 `tool_result`。
`eligible_tool_names` 默认为空。
- 第一条消息、最近 `preserve_recent_messages` 条消息,以及 `protected_message_ids` 指定的消息。
- `protected_call_ids` 指定的调用,以及不在 `eligible_tool_names` 中的工具。

同一份统计也位于 `response.metadata.compaction`。
```python
step = CompactContextStep(as_decision_model=decision_model, token_counter=count_model_input)
response = await step(
messages=snapshot,
goal="修复重试",
next_action="检查补丁",
source_refs=archive_refs,
eligible_tool_names=["read_file"],
options={"max_output_tokens": 32000},
)
```
仍然超限时返回 `reason="budget_exceeded"`、
`reason` 和 `source_ref`。

| `preserve_recent_messages` | `6` | 保护最近的消息数 |
| `max_concurrency` | `4` | 最大并发请求数 |
| `total_timeout_seconds` | `30` | 包含排队的总体请求超时 |
提供两个合成的长任务场景。工具调用及其返回值均为测试数据,历史中的部署、回滚、数据库查询不会实际执行;
只有决策请求使用真实的 TypeSafe/Jev API。
```bash
REME_RUN_DECISION_INTEGRATION=1 \
pytest tests/integration/test_decision_compaction.py -v -s
REME_RUN_DECISION_INTEGRATION=1 pytest tests/integration/test_decision_compaction.py -v -s
```
[Job Step](https://github.com/agentscope-ai/ReMe/blob/main/reme/steps/compaction/compact_context.py)。
